At a Glance
- Definition
- Tenkan-sen is the short-term Ichimoku equilibrium line (9-period high/low midpoint).
- Key takeaway
- A Tenkan/Kijun cross is a clue, not a complete signal.
- Common mistake
- Trading every Tenkan turn without cloud or Chikou confirmation.
- Live market use
- Compare Tenkan slope vs Kijun on Gold and Bitcoin daily charts.
What you will learn
- State the Tenkan formula correctly
- Interpret flat vs sloping Tenkan
- Relate Tenkan to price and Kijun without overtrading crosses
Why it matters
Tenkan reacts first. Alone it creates noise; with Kijun, Kumo, and Chikou it becomes useful short-term balance context on markets like Gold and Silver.
30-second summary
Tenkan averages the highest high and lowest low over nine periods. Rising Tenkan shows short-term strength; flat Tenkan often marks a short pause or balance zone.
Tenkan-sen
(9-period high + 9-period low) / 2
The Tenkan-sen is the midpoint of the highest high and lowest low over the last 9 periods.
Tenkan-sen = midpoint of the 9-period high and low.

Directional behavior
When price holds above a rising Tenkan, short-term balance favors bulls. A sharp Tenkan turn against the Kumo bias is often a momentum warning, not automatic reversal proof.
Flat Tenkan
A flat Tenkan means recent highs and lows are compressing. Expect chop until a new extreme expands the midpoint.
Relationship to Kijun
Tenkan above Kijun is short-term bullish relative balance; below is bearish relative balance. Confirm with price vs Kumo and Chikou before calling Sanyaku conditions.
Conceptual example
If gold’s Tenkan has flattened while price remains above a bullish Kumo, short-term equilibrium may be pausing inside a larger bullish structure — wait for Kijun and Chikou context.
Common Mistakes
- Equating a Tenkan cross with guaranteed continuation
- Ignoring flat Tenkan as “no information”
