Why It Matters

Open interest reflects paper exposure in the COMEX complex. Rising OI against falling registered inventory can increase delivery stress.

How to Interpret It

Rising: Open interest rising — greater outstanding futures exposure.
Falling: Open interest falling — outstanding futures exposure declining.
Elevated: Open interest elevated versus recent history.
Subdued: Open interest below its recent average.
Reflects paper-market exposure, not physical holdings.
Rising open interest may indicate greater participation or leverage — not inherently bullish or bearish.
Interpret alongside price, inventory, and deliveries.

Limitations

Open Interest
